The Box
805 Traction Ave
Los Angeles, CA 90013

Since 2007, The Box has worked to create a program that balances historical artists with those of a younger generation, while also investing in political and experimental practices of the art community. Our goal in organizing historical retrospective exhibitions is to give the public a deeper understanding and richer context of these artists’ work. We encourage the younger artists we show to experiment in their art practices via large installations, events or performance-based works. This multi-generational approach allows for a diverse interconnection of historical and contemporary work. In 2012, The Box moved from LA’s Chinatown into its new location in a 6,000 square foot industrial space in the Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. Opening the inaugural exhibition at the gallery was the Los Angeles Free Music Society (LAFMS), a collective of experimental musicians and artists founded in Pasadena in the early 1970s.
