albertz benda is delighted to present Never Still, Jin Jeong’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. On view from April 17 to May 23, 2025, the exhibition will present a new series of oil-on-linen paintings that emphasize the shifting qualities of natural light and its relationship with physical sensation through a heightened focus on texture and materiality.
In Never Still, Jeong explores the phenomenon of crepuscular rays: beams of light that appear at dawn or dusk, when sunlight pierces through gaps in clouds. Jeong’s recent paintings capture the quiet, ephemeral beauty of light as it transforms in its most delicate and fleeting expressions.
Focusing particularly on how daylight manifests in its most subtle and transient forms, Jeong examines the way light evokes a range of emotions through abstract compositions that invite viewers to perceive it not just as a visual phenomenon, but as an embodied presence. Drawing from her experience with astigmatism, which causes light to appear with blurred edges and diffused forms, she emphasizes the subjective nature of seeing. This concept of “formless light” highlights the intangible and ever-changing qualities of light, evoking both physical and emotional responses.
Jeong underscores the materiality of her chosen medium in a way that marks a distinct evolution in her practice. Rather than concealing her brushstrokes as she has done in the past, she now allows them to remain visible, creating a textured surface that emphasizes the physicality of light. This intentional shift draws attention to the rhythm of the artist’s painting process, allowing the materiality of the paint to mirror the mercurial nature of light.
Jeong’s paintings invite viewers to reflect on a broader question: What does it mean to see light? Is it a fixed reality, or does its meaning shift through the lens of personal perception? Her work captures the connection between light, texture, and materiality—offering a meditation on time, emotion, and the beauty of the natural world.
