Portae is composed of a series of paintings and writings which focus on pivotal moments of transition and growth. Using the term portae (Latin for “the gates”), Frontini takes the viewer through fundamental checkpoints of life with themes of birth, maturity, self-discovery, reproduction, death, and ascension. In each painting, Frontini’s figures encounter moments of tension that act as gates marking moments of personal transition as they grapple with their situations. Reflecting on their journey, the figures consider the gates that they have passed through and confront their path that lies ahead.
In Frontini’s poems, he narrates the atmosphere of emotions and thoughts accompanying his painted figures and scenes. His narration of the depicted characters pulls the viewer into the paintings in a masterful use of text to create an immersive experience unique to each work.
“A Descent”
Held without haste, without knowing. They hold tightly.
One's radiance brings ease to vitality.
The vastness of the unknown consumes us in its fluid immediacy.
A warmth and comfort lost.
Without sight a light passes the brink of calamity.
With gravity comes velocity, accompanying a moment of reflection curving exponentially.

After discovering Frontini’s talent, fellow Los Angeles based artist Devon DeJardin has been a mentor to encourage and foster his artistic growth. In Devon’s words, “Leo Frontini's expertise as a young artist is particularly pronounced in his unique ability to seamlessly blend literature and writing into his creations, elevating them to a level of depth that sets him apart from the rest. His art becomes a canvas for storytelling, with each piece a narrative waiting to be unraveled. In this fusion of art and literature, Leo Frontini demonstrates a mastery both technically and visually, that adds an unparalleled layer of richness to his work, making him a true visionary in the world of contemporary art.”
Leo Frontini [b. 2000, American] is a painter and writer based in Los Angeles, California. Frontini has found painting to be an escape from reality while also bringing him closer to the world, relationships, and himself. His formative years were spent battling depression and the results of several sports-related head injuries. Nearing the end of high school, Frontini was pushed to pursue the arts by his father, Thomas Frontini, who has been a painter his entire life and is a significant influence and mentor in his son's creative practice. In the solitariness of quarantine, Frontini began an intensive study of painting the figure. His practice is marked by a sense of admiration and even obsession with the great masters of the past. His recent pictures play with the relationship of figures and distorted architecture. Exploring color and graphic abstraction of the figure and space, his range of influences is revealed as he pulls from all periods of art history, his lived experience, and his subconscious. A visual intermingling of the past, present, and unknown provide a balance of harmony and tension. Frontini is currently based in Los Angeles.
