Vielmetter Los Angeles is thrilled to announce a Spotlight presentation of recent works by New York-based artist Ever Baldwin, on view from May 30th through July 11th, 2026. Baldwin’s works hover between painting and sculpture, their sumptuous biomorphic forms contained within intricate hand-carved frames that expand the pictorial space into multiple dimensions.
Baldwin describes their works as “a kind of palimpsest in which the figure, the landscape, and smaller bodily and botanical parts are layered and obscure one another, eventually creating some kind of new form.” The paintings seamlessly weave together abstract and representational elements, echoing natural patterns and forms in their loose symmetry, soft contours, and earthy color palette. Shapes and textures are extended and reiterated in the wooden frames that embrace the painted surface, giving the works a heightened sense of physicality and bodily presence.
A work titled Effervescent Tablets takes as its point of departure the phenomenon of a fizzy tablet dissolving in a glass of water, along with the artist’s observation of a local waterfall. Other works Choking Ivy and Galium reference the landscape of the Catskills and its invasive weed species, using the forms of leaves and flowers as the logic from which to build a composition. The painting Turning Row takes inspiration from a story of a set of three mittens knitted for a couple to hold hands while ice skating. Baldwin’s approach to painting layers inner and outer worlds – perceptual phenomena, storytelling, and examinations of the natural world become entwined in lush arrangements of color and form.
Ever Baldwin lives and works in Catskill, NY. They hold a BFA in painting from The Maryland Institute College of Art and an MFA from The School of The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.
