Karla Klarin In Conversation with Constance Mallinson

Join writer, painter, and curator Constance Mallinson in conversation with Karla Klarin on the occasion of Klarin's solo exhibition "Big Pink" currently on view.

Karla Klarin is a native of Los Angeles, and the primary subject of her paintings since 1980 has been the landscape and cityscape of her hometown. This focus continues with her current exhibit at Vielmetter Los Angeles, entitled Big Pink, based on the titles of the four largest paintings, Big Pink LA 1-4. Her work is in the collections of LACMA, Hammer Museum, Fisher Art Museum (USC), and many others. In March 2023, her book of essays and paintings, L.A.Painter/The City I Know/The City I See, was published by Angel City Press.

Constance Mallinson is a Los Angeles-based painter, writer, and curator. During her 50-year career, she has exhibited widely and is the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a COLA fellowship. Her paintings are in the permanent collections of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, The San Jose Museum, The Crocker Art Museum, and the National Academy of Sciences. She has written numerous catalog essays for university museums, for Art in America, Artillery, and the Times Quotidian. Recent curatorial projects include "Urbanature" at ArtCenter College of Design, "The Feminine Sublime" at the Pasadena Museum of California Art, and "Small is Beautiful" at the Irvine Fine Arts Center.
