Steve Turner is pleased to present Salt Water, a solo exhibition by Orlando-based MJ Torrecampo that features new paintings inspired by their parents’ retirement and subsequent return to the Philippines after many years in the United States. Water represents the vast, physical divide between the two countries and is a device that the artist uses to connect and isolate figures with their complex compositions. The works also relate to Torrecampo’s ongoing exploration of the relationship between the individual within the group as they struggle to reconcile the need to form an individual identity inside the American framework amidst their strong roots within Filipino culture.
MJ Torrecampo (born 1992, Philippines) earned an MFA at the New York Academy of Art (2020) and a BFA at the University of Central Florida (2014). They have had solo exhibitions at Gallery Ascend, Hong Kong (2024); Canepaneri Gallery, Milan (2021) and Canepaneri Gallery, Genoa (2020). This is Torrecampo’s first solo exhibition with Steve Turner.
