Solo. is pleased to present When the Sun Goes Down, a selection of high desert landscapes by photographer Guillaume Zuili dating from 2021 showcasing his mastery of Lith printing, a creative process using vintage black-and-white darkroom printing papers. The exhibition runs through October 24, 2026.

Since 2001 this Parisian transplant has focused his lens on capturing the truest, most unique expression of his adopted city of Los Angeles. More recently, his source of refuge from that city – the desert landscape of Joshua Tree – has become his obsession. 

A life-long student of film, Zuili pays homage to classic American Westerns in his series, When the Sun Goes Down. With their warm sepia tones and minimal compositions, these images have a timeless, cinematic quality. 

The artist explains, “Cinema is my matrix. Photography came later, but it all started with movies.”

The 2026 large-scale print, When the Sun Goes Down #59, is his most recent addition to the series, and the signature work in the show. Punctuating the night sky is a starkly illuminated monolithic rock, rising from a desolate platform, recalling the iconic imagery from Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is both expansive and elegantly restrained.

Born and raised in Paris, Guillaume Zuili lives and works in San Pedro, CA. His career as a photojournalist for VU’ Agency has been internationally recognized, and led to the publication of a body of work documenting the French settlements in India. His pinhole series on Los Angeles, Smoke & Mirrors, became a book published by Galerie Clémentine de la Féronnière with whom he continues to exhibit annually at Paris Photo.
