Mihai Nicodim does not care for novelty in contemporary art. If one looks back far enough for reference points for any particular artist, he says, there’s someone—or even many ones—who have attempted to create art in a similar vein. He doesn’t care for narrative, either. An artwork should speak its own language and convey its own truth and meaning without over explaining itself. A great artwork will confuse him through technique, material, texture, composition, and/or mark making in a way that compels him to stand in front of it for an hour, and still contemplate it over his evening coffee and cigarette. The four artists in Joshua Hagler, Devin B. Johnson, Nicola Samorì, Hugo Wilson are some of his favorite examples of artists whose work he continues to consider days, weeks, and years after his first introductions.
Joshua Hagler (b. 1979, Mountain Home AFB, Idaho) is a first-generation graduate with a graphic design degree from The University of Arizona. A 2018 grant recipient of the Roswell Artist in Residence Program, Hagler has since made New Mexico his permanent home. Recent exhibitions include: Joshua Hagler, Devin B. Devin B. Johnson (b. 1992, Los Angeles) obtained his BA in Fine Arts from the California State University of Channel Islands (2015) and received a Masters of Fine Arts at Pratt Institute (2019). In addition to being named a 2023 Artist-in-Residence for Fountainhead, Miami, he was selected as an Artsy Vanguard (2022), named to Forbes 30 Under 30 Art and Design (2022) list, was included in Cultured’s “Young Artists 2021,” and was one of sixteen artists from around the world selected for the inaugural year of the Black Rock Senegal residency (2020). His work is collected by Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; Pond Society, Shanghai; the Rubell Museum, Miami; the Columbus Museum of Art; Longlati Foundation, Shanghai; and many others. Nicola Samori (b. 1977, Forlì, Italy) lives and works in Bagnacavallo, Italy. His work was included as a part of the Italian Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Hugo Wilson (b. 1982, United Kingdom) lives and works in London.
