Drake Carr’s live portraiture transforms fleeting encounters into theatrical, stylized compositions. Working in real-time, he captures both everyday visitors to the gallery space and key cultural figures, rendering them with sharp precision and a heightened sense of drama. His portraits feel both immediate and timeless—rooted in contemporary L.A. culture yet evoking the elegance and intrigue of the Gilded Age, reminiscent of the society portraits of the late 19th century, where pose and persona were meticulously constructed. Using a palette dominated by soft pinks and blues, Carr embraces negative space to create a sense of weightlessness, allowing his figures to hover between presence and absence, intimacy and performance.
Hollywood Walk-ins is a residency and exhibition of live drawings by New York-based artist Drake Carr. From April 5 – May 1, each week Carr will turn the gallery into his studio, inviting artists, friends, models, and other figures from Los Angeles’ creative scenes to sit for portraits in a studio-like space designed by the artist. As the residency unfolds, these drawings will be installed throughout the gallery, forming an evolving archive of both Carr’s work and the city’s cultural landscape. This Los Angeles edition follows previous iterations of the project in Paris and New York.
