Matthew Marks is pleased to announce Cats & Apples, the next exhibition in his gallery at 1062 North Orange Grove in Los Angeles.
The exhibition centers on two motifs that artists have been depicting for centuries: Cats & Apples. Spanning over one hundred years and a wide range of media—including painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, and video—the exhibition features work by fourteen artists: Georges Braque, Joan Brown, Edwin Dickinson, Vincent Fecteau, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Katharina Fritsch, Robert Gober, Nan Goldin, Peter Hujar, Gary Hume, Laura Owens, Pablo Picasso, Linda Stark, and Sturtevant. The featured artists draw inspiration from a variety of sources including art historical tropes such as the memento mori or Ingres’s bathers, 1960s cartoons, and their own childhood memories.
