Stand C12
For the fifth edition of Frieze Los Angeles, L.A. Louver is proud to present a survey of works by the inimitable, iconoclastic American artist and musician Terry Allen. Through an exhibition of works created over six decades, Allen’s polymathy will be highlighted through virtuosic drawings, sculpture and mixed media works that spin and sneer imagined and autobiographical mythologies. Raised in Lubbock, Texas, Allen and his wife and collaborator Jo Harvey Allen in the early 1960s moved to Los Angeles, where he attended Chouinard. Since that time, the storyteller and songwriter has created over a score of different bodies of work that weave together conceptual, narrative, musical and theatrical frameworks that reflect on American darkness, existential dread, and human absurdity. Having recorded 14 albums [including the Western canonical LPs Juarez (1975) and Lubbock (On Everything) (1979), with a 15th album to be released in 2024].
The definitive, authorized biography of Terry Allen, Truckload of Art: The Life and Work of Terry Allen, by Brendan Greaves will be released on 19 Mar 2024. Preorder a copy now through Paradise of Bachelors.
