Performance: Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork x Adee Roberson

Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork’s practice is informed by a longstanding ethos of collaborating with other artists, from pop songwriters to choreographers to computer programmers.

On the occasion of her solo exhibition at ICA LA, Kiyomi Gork has invited artist and friend Adee Roberson to play the drums outside of Into/Loving/Against/Lost in the Loop, a sound installation which features an electronic beat generated from live audio pulled from the surrounding galleries. Listen as Roberson’s beats are remixed, distorted, and amplified into another kind of “beat” as you walk through the Project Room’s sonic maze.

Jacqueline Kiyomi Gork (b. 1982, Long Beach, CA) has been working with the intersection of sound, sculpture, and performance since 2002. She studied sound art, photography, and new genres at the San Francisco Art Institute and researched the history of communication technologies, acoustics, and computer music at Stanford University. Her work has been included in several group exhibitions, including Made in L.A.: A Version, Hammer Museum, Los Angeles (2020); Searching the Sky for Rain, Sculpture Center, New York (2019); Soundtracks, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco (2017); and Geometry of Now, V-A-C Foundation, Moscow (2017). Other solo presentations include those at 356 Mission Rd. and Human Resources, both in Los Angeles. She is represented by François Ghebaly, Los Angeles and Empty Gallery, Hong Kong.

Adee Roberson (b.1981, West Palm Beach, Florida) is an interdisciplinary artist whose work is a meditation on symbolism and texture. Synthesizing performance and installation, her work melds vibration and technicolor visions through paintings, video, and melodic compositions. These works offer a refracted timeline of black diasporic movement, weaving sonic and familial archives, with landscape, rhythm, and spirit. They have exhibited and performed at numerous venues including, California African American Museum (CAAM), MOCA, Los Angeles, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Antenna Gallery, Project Row Houses, Palm Springs Art Museum, Human Resources, UTA Artist Space, NADA Miami, Charlie James Gallery, Contemporary Art Center New Orleans, and Art Gallery of Ontario. Adee has been an Artist-In-Residence at Echo Park Film Center, Treehouse Lagos, and ACRE. She is a recipient of the New York Foundation for the Arts Cutting Edge Grant and the 2021 Los Angeles Artadia Award. She is based in Los Angeles, California.
