David Zwirner is pleased to present an exhibition of new drawings and prints by renowned illustrator and cartoonist R. Crumb (b. 1943), on view at the gallery’s Los Angeles location. In his latest works—many of which were made for an upcoming zine—Crumb reflects on life in his eighties and his sixty-year career as well as themes of personal and mass paranoia during these times of social and political unrest. As in much of his work, Crumb’s most mordant attacks are reserved for himself, which show him contending with his own manic anxieties in his typically humorous and insightful manner.
This will be Crumb’s first exhibition in Los Angeles in over fifteen years, since The Bible Illuminated: R. Crumb’s Book of Genesis, the artist’s celebrated presentation of illustrations of the first book of the Old Testament, which debuted at the Hammer Museum in 2009. In April, a new biography of the artist was published by Scribner to critical and popular acclaim
