Band of Vices (DTLA) is pleased to present WHISPERS OF RENEWAL, the second solo exhibition by Ghanaian artist, Patrick Tagoe-Turkson with the gallery. His previous show, RECLAMATION stands as a preclude to this upcoming presentation. The show will open on Saturday, the 14th of September 2024, from 2pm - 6pm. It will be on view through the 12th of October 2024.
This is the gallery’s second exhibition since relocating from Los Angeles’ West Adams district neighborhood to the Historic Downtown Los Angeles Arts District.
Ghanaian artist Patrick Tagoe-Turkson’s environmental concerns belie a complex, systemic phenomena - textile production and fast fashion. Ghana, situated within the context of a saturated, ever-evolving, globalized economy, has seen handmade artisan goods overrun by mass production within the last century.
Tagoe-Turkson’s work focuses on recycling these discarded flip-flops from the beaches in Ghana, intertwining them with traditional art concepts. His aim is to revive these traditions while raising awareness about environmental conservation and sustainability. By blending intricate patterns, symbols, and sign systems from Ghana's artistic heritage with discarded materials, he tries to bridge the gap between tradition and contemporary issues. Through his work, he preserves and honors Ghanaian art, encouraging viewers to appreciate its cultural heritage. Reviving historical art concepts evokes pride and connection to our past, emphasizing sustainability and responsible consumption. Tagoe-Turkson’s work sparks conversations about cultural preservation, environmental consciousness, and the transformative power of artistic expression. By exploring the intersection of tradition and innovation, his artwork promotes appreciation for our heritage and the importance of protecting the natural environment.
