839 is a new gallery co-founded by writer and educator Liz Hirsch and artist Joshua Smith, in their home in Hollywood, Los Angeles. The gallery will open its inaugural group show, “Summer 24” on June 29, followed by a series of solo shows. The program features a diverse group of artists working across a variety of media, based between Los Angeles, New York, and Europe.
The gallery’s mission is to showcase compelling and thought-provoking artwork while uplifting and supporting the artists it represents through ongoing opportunities and repeat exhibitions over the years. The gallery aims to cultivate long-term relationships with the artists it shows and to foster their growth and development.
While 839 plans to participate in the art market, the program won’t be obedient to it. The gallery will show work that demonstrates thoughtfulness, creativity, and skill regardless of the moment’s perceived markets, trends, etc. The gallery will also shun political conservatism but provide a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for progressive and left artists to express themselves freely.
