As part of a series of new content generated in anticipation of the forthcoming Hammer Museum’s Made in L.A. 2020 biennial titled a version, Gallery Association Los Angeles (GALA) presents video profiles on the biennial's curators and selected artists.
Known for his densely layered and colorfully complex airbrush paintings, artist Mario Ayala draws inspiration from pop culture and a variety of Los Angeles subcultures. His wildly expressive and deeply personal artistic style centers around art forms and representations unique to the Latinx identity. In this video, Mario offers an alternative artist visit format which includes a collage of original and sourced imagery that informs elements of his art making practice.
